Unspeakable cruelty

Unspeakable cruelty

A MAN at Okakarara, Wezemba Tjikuere, has been fined N$200 for animal cruelty after cutting off a neighbour’s dog’s ears and tail.
Tjikuere also had to pay the cost of treating the dog’s injuries.

His own dog, a bitch, was in heat and he did not want his neighbour’s male dog to come near her, so he tied it to a tree and cut off its ears and tail. The injured dog’s owner took it to the local veterinarian, where it was treated for the wounds and for shock and severe trauma. The Otjiwarongo SPCA is now nursing the dog back to health before returning it to its owner.’The dog is now eating well and will recover, but is still traumatised. I go to see him daily to bring him some meat and he has connected with me. He is a very friendly dog and it is heartbreaking to see what this beautiful animal has been going through,’ says Edith Gessner of the Otjiwarongo SPCA. The SPCA has once again called on people to have their pets neutered or spayed, as this not only prevents unwanted litters but also keeps animals from wandering off in search of a mate.
