UNAM were crowned Namibia’s rugby champions for the second year in a row after a scintillating 44-36 victory against Wanderers on Saturday evening.
In a match that went down to the wire, the lead changed several times, with Unam holding a slight 25-24 lead at halftime.
In a pulsating second half, Unam opened up a 10-point gap but Wanderers once again came back to reduce the deficit to 37-36 before Unam’s substitute back Jerome Beukes put the issue beyond doubt with a final try.
Wanderers won the try count six to four but their discipline let them down as thy conceded numerous penalties and Lorenzo Louis’ accurate boot made the difference.
He ended up scoring 26 points which consisted of one try, three conversions and five penalties.
Unam’s other try scorers were the wings Sylvano Beukes and Unomasa Kavita and replacement scrum half Jerome Beukes, while fly half Helarius Kisting added a drop goal.
For Wanderers, fullback Riaan van Zyl scored two tries, and prop Schalk Bergh, wing Heico Prinsloo, eighthman Stef Botha and scrum half Enem Kritzinger one try each, while Prinsloo added three conversions.
Unam’s second team also won the Reserve League title after beating Wanderers 29-25 in the final.
The First League final was won by Ocean Swallows of Luderitz who beat Mariental 17-14.
