THREE truck drivers aged 41, 27 and 37 were arrested in two separate incidents at the Oshivelo checkpoint in the Oshikoto region for smuggling goods.
In the first incident at around 21h55 on 19 May 2021, police officers manning the road block stopped a truck belonging to Topaz Trucks and conducted a routine search.
At least 21 boxes of smuggled Yes cigarettes, containing 150 000 cigarette sticks valued at N$150 000 were found on the truck and the driver was arrested.
In the second incident another truck was found carrying four smuggled boxes of “Best” Whiskies containing 240 sachets valued at N$5 each and two boxes of Yes cigarettes with 5 000 cigarettes altogether total value of N$14 800.
The third driver was arrested for allegedly smuugling 60 boxes of whiskey, and one box of cigarettes. The value of the contraband could not be ascertained.
Acting police commander for Oshikoto region deputy commissioner Petrus Shigwedha confirmed the arrests and said the suspects are set appear in the magistrate’s court in Tsumeb soon.
