Tjongarero takes youth council fight to court

Agnes Tjongarero

An urgent court application has been brought against the three young people involved in the ongoing National Youth Council (NYC) saga with youth minister Agnes Tjongarero.

The three are William Minnie (from the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) Youth Command Element), Julia Nekwaya (secretary general of the Popular Democratic Movement Youth League) and Japhet Amakali.

The minister wants the court to issue an order restricting the trio from locking the NYC headquarters.

She also wants an order restricting the respondents from disturbing operations, intimidating staff, and switching off the power to the NYC .

The trio have clashed with Tjongarero over her decision to appoint an interim board to run the affairs of the council.

The aggrieved youth, who constitute members of several political parties, elected their own board with Simon Taapopi as chairperson last year.

The minister had implored that the proceedings of electing a board be halted until several grievances were ironed out.

However, the trio accused the minister of seeking to intimidate them and putting in place members loyal to her.
