TikToker pushes youth to vote

Junior Katoma

Junior Katoma went from breakup comedy on TikTok to using the platform to empower young Namibians and drive voter registration.

The content creator is becoming known not only for comedy and amapiano, but also for using his platform to push civic responsibility among young people.

Katoma says the turning point came when he attended the Namibian Constitution @35 Conference, where speakers stressed the role of young people in shaping the country.

“I realised it was more than a message; it was a shift. I realised my influence could do more than entertain; it could empower,” he says.

He says that message made him rethink how he uses his voice online and what kind of content he delivers.

Now a first-year law student at the University of Namibia (Unam), Katoma is learning to balance two worlds that many assume are incompatible.

As his following grew, his content matured, he says.

Katoma says he began combining jokes with short, motivational clips.

“My online presence has naturally matured, moving from jokes to intentional, motivational messaging,” he says.

His recent collaboration with the National Youth Council, encouraging youth participation in the upcoming regional council and local authority elections, is one example of how his platform now extends beyond entertainment.

Katoma says he is still working on balancing his online presence with his studies and hopes the two would support each other.

“I believe quality and dedication should never drop. Success is having the privilege to study law while using my voice to inspire others – all while maintaining a strong personal identity,” he says.

Katoma believes his social media work has helped him develop the confidence and communication skills useful for his law journey.

But nothing comes easy, and he says both content creation and law require discipline, quality and consistency.

Katoma wants young people to see that influence and ambition can go hand in hand, and that social media can be used for more than just jokes when creators choose to be intentional.
