The SUV that puts safety first

Armed with a camera bag slung over my shoulder and a water bottle in hand, entering the car was effortless, with no need for keys.

Even starting the car is a breeze. As long as the keys are on your person, there is no need to even remove it from your pocket. And once the MU-X senses the key is no longer in close proximity, it auto-locks the car.

The Onyx – 3.0L Turbo Diesel Isuzu MU-X is complemented by a 6-speed auto gearbox with a 4×4 drive configuration with differential lock and a low range transfer case. All of which makes it ideal for any off-road terrain.

The MU-X engine is not only the largest in its class, but a smooth ride is guaranteed, with the car's power and handling making driving a pleasure. It is equally adept at handling off-road terrain and city traffic, while double parking or squeezing into a tight parking spot is easy with safety features like the front and rear parking distance sensors. This is complemented by a rear-view camera with high resolution view, which makes reverse-parking stress free.

The Isuzu's Advanced Driver Assistance System (Adas) also monitors surroundings for any dangers or hazards while driving, making use of sensors and cameras. Top Revs experienced the effectiveness of these cameras when a jaywalker elicited a reaction of flashing red lights on the windscreen to alert the driver. And when the driver didn't react in time, Adas took over to avoid an accident.

Top Revs has been bombarded with questions about the car's central locking system during a collision. Does it jam? Does it automatically open or can emergency rescue services open the doors manually?

In case of an accident, the Isuzu's eight airbags will automatically activate, and the central locking will automatically deactivate, allowing passengers to get out of the vehicle, or paramedics to access the injured.

Misacceleration mitigation allows the car's stereo cameras to detect any unintentional acceleration and step in to prevent any collisions. Even the reverse camera will warn the driver of any obstacles, such as pedestrians, or other vehicles, and the system will even tell you from which direction the obstacle is approaching.

The interior of the Onyx feels like stepping into a designer boutique, with world-class upholstery and an infotainment system that is not only user-friendly, but offers everything the driver, or passenger may need. Wireless connectivity is literally at your finger tips, and is compatible with both Apple and Android, which enables full functionality of your smartphone.

Noise insulation and rear door sealing ensure a quiet ride, with cabin ambience comparable to high-end premium brands.

The new Isuzu hasn't just had a facelift with a few cosmetic touches, it feels more like the car was rebuilt from the ground up.

Certainly, Isuzu's engineers did their homework. At up to 80kg lighter, fuel efficiency is improved, with a combined urban and highway fuel consumption of just 7,6l/100km with emissions of 199g/km.

This SUV is only one of many models available in the new Isuzu range, with the series offering two engine sizes – the 3,0L delivering 140kW and the 1,9L capable of 110kW at 3600rpm.
