Everybody loves to escape reality with a good film.
Crime, suspense, romance and comedy are perfect avenues to enter new worlds and ‘The Lovebirds’ offers all these for eager viewers.
Starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple at the end of the road with their relationship, this love story takes an unexpected turn which leads them on a wild goose chase and murder mystery around New Orleans.
Currently streaming on Netflix, the film was initially scheduled for a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures on 3 April 2020, but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic closing theatres worldwide – a blessing in disguise.
Hilarious at moments with great acting and chemistry from the leads, ‘The Lovebirds’ is the perfect movie to watch at home while snuggling up with your partner.
Lacking the depth and intricacy to be a true blockbuster, this film is probably better off not being in a cinema. But that’s not entirely bad news as some movies serve the sole purpose of being entertaining, which ‘The Lovebirds’ does perfectly well.
Portraying how some relationships break down due to lack of communication and understanding, ‘The Lovebirds’ also shows that love can blossom and be rejuvenated under the weirdest circumstances.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 66% based on 133 reviews, with an average rating of 5,97/10. The website’s critical consensus reads: “If the breezily enjoyable ‘The Lovebirds’ feels like a little less than the sum of its parts, it’s still an enjoyable showcase for the talents of its well-matched stars,” while Metacritic weighted the film’s average score at 58 out of 100, based on 33 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.
While the nature of the comedy or romance explored in the film might not be everyone’s cup of tea, ‘The Lovebirds’ is still an enjoyable watch.
Starring two POC actors is also a great boost as not many other actors could have pulled off these roles with the amount of on-screen chemistry as Rae and Nanjiani.
