It is with profound respect and deep sorrow that we bid farewell to Sam Nujoma, the founding president of Namibia.
Born on 12 May 1929, Nujoma lived a life of extraordinary dedication, courage, and vision, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Namibia and the African continent.
Nujoma was a beacon of hope and resilience, a man who dedicated his life to the liberation of his people from the shackles of colonialism and apartheid. From his humble beginnings in the village of Etunda, he rose to become a towering figure in the struggle for Namibia’s independence.
His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and self-determination inspired millions and galvanised a nation to fight for its freedom.
As the founding leader of Swapo, Nujoma led the armed struggle and diplomatic efforts that ultimately culminated in Namibia’s independence on 21 March 1990.
His leadership was characterised by wisdom, humility, and an unyielding belief in the power of unity. Under his guidance, Namibia emerged as a symbol of hope and testament to the triumph of the human spirit over oppression.
As the first president of Namibia, Nujoma laid the foundation for a democratic and inclusive nation. His visionary leadership ensured that Namibia’s diverse cultures and communities were embraced, fostering a sense of national pride and cohesion.
He championed policies that promoted education, healthcare, and economic development, setting the stage for a brighter future for generations to come.
Beyond his political achievements, Nujoma was a man of the people. His humility, compassion, and deep connection to the land and its people endeared him to Namibians from all walks of life. He was a father, a mentor, and a symbol of hope, whose legacy will continue to inspire not only Namibians, but all those who strive for freedom and justice.
As we mourn the death of this great leader, we also celebrate his remarkable life and legacy. Nujoma’s contributions to Namibia and the world will never be forgotten. His spirit lives on in the hearts of the Namibian people and in the ideals of freedom, unity, and progress that he so passionately championed.
Rest in peace, comrade founding president.
