‘The Girl from St Agnes’ is a Gripping SA Murder Mystery

“YOU can’t stop me now. This is happening tonight.” These are the last words of Lexi Summerveld ,whose lifeless body is found at an abandoned mill at the prestigious St Agnes on the night of a Valentine’s dance. Pupils are mortified. Teachers are worried about the reputation of the school.

The police believe a killer runs amok in the Midlands, but later dismiss Summerveld’s death as an accident. But is it really?

Introducing ‘The Girl From St Agnes’, a stunning South African whodunnit that has an entire boarding school reeling with questions. The series sparked interest after its trailer was released last year and we have actors Nina Milner, Graham Hopkins and Robert Hobbs, among others, to thank.

Milner stars as drama assistant Kate Ballard, who is passionate about what she does. She is one of the people most affected by Summerveld’s death, seeing as they had a close relationship, which prompts her to investigate further. She’s obviously not going to like what she finds, but that’s what happens when you go looking for the truth.

It has everything a murder mystery should: A dark atmospheric noir, engaging and memorable dialogue and diverse characters with a closet full of skeletons, much like what you’d see on ‘Riverdale’ or ‘The Vampire Diaries’, but with an invigorating South African twist.

And here’s the bonus: According to fortressofsolitude.co.za, ‘The Girl From St Agnes’ was “commissioned, produced, written and directed by women”.

Not only does it tackle unsolved murders, but a variety of issues from bullying and rape to sexism and all the other aspects that come with attending South African boarding school. It’s not as rosy as it seems.

The eight-part series raised eyebrows for all the right reasons after its trailer was released – and it has every reason to celebrate after its debut broke viewing records on Showmax.

Clearly it indicates that people, especially in the African market, are interested in local and relatable content and Multichoice Africa has identified and acted upon this. South African productions are striving for international standards, and we have to say, it seems ‘The Girl From St Agnes’ is just the tip of the iceberg of more incredible series to come.

‘The Girl From St Agnes’ is now available for viewing on showmax.com.
