Tear gas was released into a crowd of armed forces to maintain order at
the Windhoek West polling station yesterday evening. Namibian Defence Force spokesperson
lieutenant colonel Petrus Shilumbu confirmed this. A military ambulance arrived on site to assist
officers who were affected by the tear gas. As special voting kicked off in Windhoek for Namibian
Police officers, Namibian Defence Force members, diplomats and Namibians in the diaspora
yesterday, ballot shortages, long queues and delays at some polling stations marred the exercise. Photo: Electoral Commission of Namibia
