Ster-Kinekor’s ‘Throwback Cinema’ rescreens the classics

Moviegoers are invited to enjoy a blast from the past as Ster-Kinekor Theatres returns its ‘Throwback Cinema’ campaign.

Having recently screened a selection of enduring gems such as ‘Chicago’ (2002), ‘Notting Hill’ (1999) and ‘Meet Joe Black’ (1998), Ster-Kinekor Maerua Mall is currently rescreening the strongest contender for the time travel blockbuster of them all – Robert Zemeckis’ ‘Back to the Future’ (1985).

If you’re a Boomer or Gen X, seeing ‘Back to the Future’ return to the cinema may prompt some déjà vu.

But if you’re a millennial who watched this film over and over on a worn VHS tape, wondering what it would be like to see it on the big screen, this throwback may be a dream come true.

Starring Michael J Fox as teenage time traveller Marty McFly alongside Christopher Lloyd’s eccentric scientist doctor Emmet L Brown, ‘Back to the Future’ follows the exploits of the unlikely duo as they traverse time in a souped up, silver DeLorean.

““Back to the Future 1’ is one of those classic movies that take us back and yet it can be seen over and over. So, it makes sense that Ster-Kinekor has included it among its Throwback Cinema titles,” says Ster-Kinekor Theatres in a press release.

“What also makes perfect ‘cents’ is the movie ticket price,” the press release reads.

Throwback Cinema titles can be viewed at a price below the normal ticket fee.

Considering the initiative as a whole, Ster-Kinekor Theatre chief marketing officer Lynne Wylie bets on the power of nostalgia.

“People who love movies love reliving all the great movie moments on the big screen,” says Wylie.

“Throwback Cinema allows us to bring back some of these unforgettable titles for our customers to enjoy at a very affordable ticket price,” she says.

“We’ve had a wonderful time going through the catalogues to select the films, and we are sure everyone who books a ticket to watch one of them will have a similar big screen experience,” Wylie says.

Throwback Cinema titles will be screened at select Ster-Kinekor sites across South Africa and at Ster-Kinekor Maerua in Maerua Mall, Windhoek.
