Before the coronavirus lockdown had us pounding on the windows of our respective homes, there were nights out with Something-Artsy. Creative entrepreneur Jaimee-Lee Diergaardt’s independent art studio known for such popular social arts events as ‘Paint & Wine’.

Whether these sessions were hosted at the studio or at Piccolo Café and Lounge, the idea was always to spark creativity in a fun and interactive setting.

With Something-Artsy’s in-person arts, crafts and sewing classes cancelled to help curb spreading the virus, Diergaardt will deliver canvases, brushes, flower palettes and paints to your door as part of her ‘Stay Home & Make Art’ initiative.

“Many people are looking for ways to distract themselves while stuck inside their homes and parents in particular are looking for ways to keep their children creatively entertained as they bore easily,” says Diergaardt.

“Since I can’t have people come to our studio to create, I decided to make our art supplies accessible to the people, allowing them to be creative in the comfort of their homes.”

To Diergaardt, art is a relaxing and rewarding hobby that allows you to use your time purposefully while lowering stress levels and improving one’s overall sense of well-being.

“Art in any of its forms can be therapeutic although painting, in my opinion, is most probably the easiest form of self-exploration as there is no right or wrong way to go about it,” says Diergaardt.

“The goal shouldn’t be to create a masterpiece but rather to express yourself freely and enjoy the process. The aim is to walk away enriched, thoughtful and open-minded, with something you created and are proud of.”

Quite certain that there is an artist inside everyone and now is the time to let them out, Diergaardt will be launching more DIY kits but suggests that the budget conscious skip the canvas as you can paint on anything you have at home.

“We have 12 colours to choose from but all you really need is red, yellow, blue, black and white. You can mix these together to create other colours,” she says. “Creating art isn’t just for artists, art is for everyone! Within each of us lies a spark of creativity.”
