St Boniface inspires Negumbo SSS

FOUR study tours to St Boniface College outside Rundu are one of the reasons behind the success story of Negumbo Senior Secondary School.

“I visited the school four times. Twice on official visits and the other two were just personal visits. We have established good relations and we wanted to see what they do that we too can endorse,” said Iiyambo Alugongo, principal of Negumbo SSS this week.

The school credits its success to hard work and discipline, while their logo – Always Committed – sums up the spirit embodied in the two ingredients.

Although Alugongo said his first impression of St Boniface was that he was at the wrong place, his school hopes to adopt the same culture as that of St Boniface College.

“I could not believe there was a school in existence. It’s very quiet and you only hear the birds singing,” he says, laughing.

He says he picked up the fact that the pupils at St Boniface are very disciplined, a culture he would love to instil at Negumbo.

Alugongo further says with discipline, they also take their school’s logo very seriously.

He says commitment comes from teachers, pupils as well as parents who are also very much involved with their children’s education.

“There is a need to be disciplined for teaching and learning to take place. You will have a chaotic situation in classrooms if the pupils are not disciplined,” he adds, saying hard work is the key to success.

“If we do not put in extra work, we will not get good results. We also have learners who need special attention, which they may not get during lessons.”

Such high standard of discipline was visible on Monday evening, when The Namibian found three teachers conducting evening classes.

Supporting my observations, Alugongo says, on Sundays two other teachers also held classes.

Yesterday, all the 23 teachers attended a meeting with the deputy regional director Loide Shatiwa at Nuujoma Secondary School at Oshikuku in the Omusati region.

Despite the teachers’ absence from the school, the pupils seriously attended to their studies in the classrooms.
