I hear a soft, airy wind, get a smell of fresh air, and the feeling of soft fabrics against skin, all wrapped in the beautiful colours nature gives us. How close we are from transitioning from heavy wool, tweed, corduroy and polyester fleece to lightweight silk, breathable linen and soft cotton, a dream about to become reality. To breaking free from heavy coats, to the sound of heels clicking on pavement where boots used to thud.
That is spring coming for your wardrobe.
Is your wardrobe ready?
You should be! From our last article, we learned how to dress for the in-between seasons, which means we have begun with transitioning slowly from winter to summer. Right?
Perfect, but what is really important when transitioning your wardrobe?
A well-edited wardrobe. It makes the shift into a new season so much easier, and it helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed by clothes that won’t be worn for the next six to nine months.
A new season is a perfect opportunity to refresh, organise and simplify your wardrobe. We know it can be a little daunting, so here are a few tips to get you started.
Step One: Purge
Empty everything onto your bed to see the real volume. Keep only what currently fits and flatters you – not what you’re saving for a goal weight or would wear when you become like Beyonce. Start by pulling out the pieces and separate them into different seasonal items.
Step Two: Store
Gather all seasonal items that you’d like to hang on to for next year and set them aside. Plastic storage containers, storage bags from Pep, and even an empty suitcase are all great places for your seasonal items to be stored away. However, it’s important to keep them in a cool, dark and dry place to prevent fading or mould.
Step Three: Organise
Now that we’ve decided which items are keepers and which identified them into their seasons, it’s time to organise them so that outfits are easy to put together. Order some organisational items, like shelf dividers, shoe holders or tools to transform your space. When your closet is truly organised, it’s like having a whole new wardrobe.
Step Four: Resell or Donate
Clothes of good quality and which are still intact you can resell at a reasonable price, or you can donate your clothes to those in need. Whatever you do, don’t throw away old clothing. It’s better for the environment and can really make a difference in someone’s life.
Once you’ve edited your wardrobe, that’s when the real transition begins.
Three Easy Ways To Transition Your Wardrobe To Spring
- Swap your fabrics, not your whole closet
You don’t need a new wardrobe, all you need is a fabric shift. Trade wool, tweed and fleece for linen, cotton and silk. Same pieces, lighter feel.
- Let colour back in
Winter hides in greys and blacks. Spring says bring back colour, grab a lighter coloured item, a bold scarf, a bright light sweater, or even just one statement piece to shake off hibernation mode.
- Trade boots for something that clicks
Swap the thud of boots for heels, or leather or suede shoes. Small change, big shift in energy.
And if you want to add new pieces, stick to a theme of colours so you don’t end up running out of outfits. In our next column, we will be looking at colour themes for the wardrobe.
Until next time, stylish dolls.
