‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is a blast from the past

IT’S a field day for fans as Tom Holland reprises his role as the friendly neighbourhood webslinger in Jon Watts’ top notch ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021).

Set after the events of ‘Far From Home’ (2019) at the end of which Mysterio tells the world that Spidey is, in fact, Peter Parker, the film kicks off with the young hero having to navigate instant fame and notoriety.

The bad press is fueled by J K Simmons’ noxious J Jonah Jameson of The Daily Bugle which brands Peter a vigilante, a menace and a murderer. Meanwhile, Spidey, his girlfriend (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) are just trying to get into MIT.

As Spider-Man’s unmasking obliterates any stab at normalcy for Peter and his pals, Spidey enlists the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and implores him to do his wizard thing so everyone can forget who is actually under the mask.

Chaos and a mess with the Multiverse ensue as villains from alternate universes appear in Spidey’s one and this is when things really get fun.

Enter Electro, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard and The Green Goblin, a veritable parade of villains from the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb universes.

Jamie Foxx, Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe reprise their roles and it’s a trip as are a few other reprisals I won’t spoil but which may be the coolest crossover we have seen in the MCU and beyond.

Definitely the kind of film you can’t say much about without spoilers, the long and short of it is that ‘No Way Home’ is a fun ride packed with blasts from the past, amazing action sequences and great performances but it is also a coming of age story.

In a film with as much tragedy as levity, Holland hits all the right notes and truly makes the character his own in contrast and as a credit to the Spideys who have come before him.

If you’ve been following the franchise since the Tobey Maguire era, the third film in Spidey’s ‘Home’ series is for you. Dive in and bring tissues.
