‘Someone Great’

Netflix keeps coming in hot with the girl-led goods in ‘Someone Great’ (2019), an offbeat romantic comedy starring Gina Rodriguez, DeWanda Wise and Brittany Snow.

Written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and delivering the soft focus meet cutes and montages we’ve come to expect from the genre, ‘Someone Great”s actual agenda is the celebration of female friendship.

Enter Rodriguez’s music journaling Jenny, Wise’s real estate agent Erin and Snow’s social media managing Blair, three working millennial women each at a crossroads in their love life.

Though the central relationship is the one crumbling between Jenny (Rodriguez) and Lakeith Stanfield’s Nate, the film gives us some nuance when it comes to women’s relationships.

Erin, though smitten, downplays how deeply in love she is with her girlfriend, Blair is bored to tears in her long-term relationship and Jenny is moving to a new city to pursue her career – but without the man she has been dating for nine years.

An entertaining, resolutely hip and on trend illustration of the ups and downs of love and life, ‘Someone Great’ – though riddled with clichés and apartments well beyond its central characters’ salaries – works thanks to the chemistry between its women leads who channel heartbroken but adorable, sexy, smart and devastatingly witty and cutesy blonde ambition with flair.

Giving us a friendship that feels lived in, answers or ellipsis that don’t come easy and the reality that sometimes you have to do life alone, ‘Someone Great’ is a refreshing film for a girls’ night in bound to make you smile, dance a little and Google the soundtrack.

‘Someone Great’ (2019) is now streaming on Netflix.
