Ex-Nust employee charged with N$2.6m fraud

A Former employee of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) has appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and money laundering involving payments totalling more than N$2.6 million students allegedly made to her.

Maria Hengari (41), who was arrested on Wednesday, is being held in custody after appearing in court before magistrate Immanuel Udjombala yesterday.

Hengari is accused of defrauding Nust and its bursar during the period from 2021 to 2024 by receiving payments totalling about N$2.64 million from 130 students and not paying the money to the university.

It is also alleged that Hengari cleared students’ debts they owed to Nust on the university’s record system after money had been handed to her or paid into her bank account.

Udjombala informed Hengari of her right to apply to be released on bail after public prosecutor Reinhardt Kamatoto informed the court that the state is objecting to the granting of bail to her at this stage.

Hengari was remanded in custody and her case was postponed to 3 June for further investigations
