It’s psychic versus psychic in ‘Solace’ (2016), a psychological thriller starring Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish and Colin Farrell.
Telling the supernatural story of a retired and reclusive doctor with significant psychic powers asked to rejoin the fray when an uncanny serial killer begins to neatly and humanely kill a confounding array of people, ‘Solace’ is dark and shallowly philosophical with a finger or two in the stale jar.
Though the performance by Hopkins is predictably great, turns by Morgan and Cornish are comparatively rigid and banal. A situation not helped by the fact that the immensely able Farrell only appears halfway through the film.
Not vaguely channelling films such as ‘Se7en’ (1995) and ‘Silence of the Lambs’ (1991), ‘Solace’ serves up an entertaining FBI drama in the tradition of some of the psychological greats but never ascends to their classic heights.
Eerie, engrossing and with Hopkins ever worth the watch, ‘Solace’ is a decent night out if you like your detective films sinister and supernatural.
