The government is set to announce funding from state-owned enterprises towards football leagues across the country, a move expected to support more than 20 000 job opportunities.
The ministries of works and transport, information and communication technology, and finance are expected to announce this soon.
Prime minister Elijah Ngurare has revealed this on social media, saying the funding forms part of a broader efforts to deliver on the priorities of the sixth National Development Plan.
“For the Swapo Party government, the slogan remains: Now is hard work,” he says.
He says the government is working to deliver services to Namibians, with agriculture, sport, youth empowerment and the creative industry among its priorities.
The funding announcement follows an earlier commitment to mobilise money to revamp Sam Nujoma Stadium.
“I am pleased to confirm that this has been done,” Ngurare says, without disclosing the amount secured for the stadium project.
He says the SOE funding for leagues would provide “assurance of job opportunities for over 20 000 people”, as indicated by the Namibia Football Association.
“The aim is nation building,” the prime minister says.
