Skinner breaks Namibian record at World Champs

XANDER Skinner came sixth in his 100m freestyle heat in a new Namibian record time at the Fina World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea on Wednesday.

Skinner’s time of 50,44 seconds beat his own former Namibian record of 50,65 seconds that he set at the Dutch Open last month.

Skinner’s time was the 53rd fastest overall of the 120 swimmers who competed in the event.

Calaeb Dressel of the United States set the fastest time of 47,32, followed by Vladislav Grinev of Russia (47,92) and Marcelo Chierghini of Brazil (47,95).

Namibia’s Ronan Wantenaar was also in action in the men’s 200m individual medley on Wednesday, finishing seventh in his heat in a time of 2:09,02.

This was just under a second off his own national record of 2:08,04.

Wantenaar’s time was the 43rd fastest out of 51 swimmers that completed the event.

Laszlo Cseh of Hungary set the fastest heat time of 1:57,79, followed by Daiya Seto of Japan (1:57,90) and Chase Kalisz of the United States (1:58,20).
