It may seem like the easiest thing in the world to do until you’re facing a sales lady with no eyebrows, save for a line, shakily drawn in by eye pencil.
You see it, everyone else sees it, but no one is brave enough to tell this nice woman that her brows are a threat to the very image of our beloved country.
I solicited the help of Hannah Nangula, one of the brightest make-up artists in the country, to find out just how to avoid a disastrous brow situation.
What you’ll need: An angled liner brush (fills in brows with brow powder), an angled brush (to shape brows using concealer) and concealer brush plus a lash and brow brush to comb the brow.
Firstly, figure out which method of trimming your brow works for you. Waxing, tweezing, shaping with a blade or threading. Then you need to find your eyebrow shape. Hannah lists the five different types of eyebrows most people have naturally: they are either round, angled, curved, soft angled or straight.
“Once you have found the shape of your eyebrow, use it as a guide for maintaining your eyebrows,” says Hannah.
The first step to having great brows is to follow your natural shape when you get your eyebrows groomed. Don’t try and change your shape (from flat to angled for example) because then your eyebrows will look strange and out of place.
“The next step is to find your natural arch, where it begins and ends,” she says.
If you decided to use waxing, threading or shaping with a blade, just tell your make-up artist to follow your natural shape and arch, they’ll know what to do.
The key to having great eyebrows is to work with what you naturally have. That means following your basic shape and natural arch. Of course, accidents do happen, and if your eyebrows get too thin or over-plucked, you can use a brow pencil or powder. They are also great products to own if you have naturally sparse or light coloured brows.
Hannah warns of following trends, saying that well-groomed, natural and polished brows are what one should concentrate on instead.
• With the help of a small brush, start brushing your eyebrows.
• Take a pencil that is similar to your eyebrow and hair colour and begin shaping them. Start to outline the bottom on both sides then go to the top. Be careful to create symmetry because this is one of the most important steps of the process.
• After creating the outline shapes, fill in the brows with the same pencil or powder and brush again.
• Take a foundation or a concealer of a colour lighter than your skin and apply it around your eyebrows, then blend it with a small brush. You are ready!
