Shaanika to sit on Kudu Chemicals board

Fabian Shaanika

Green Metals Refining (GMR) Ltd, a midstream refining company dedicated to the production of low-cost battery-grade manganese chemicals for the green energy transition, has appointed Fabian Shaanika to Kudu Chemicals’ board.

Kudu Chemicals is a wholly owned subsidiary of Green Metals, registered in Namibia.

Shaanika is a seasoned executive with over 25 years’ experience across the mining and banking sectors.

He brings extensive expertise in executive leadership, project development and financing.

He has a strong network of stakeholders across Namibia’s natural resources and renewable energy sectors.

His deep local insight will provide valuable strategic guidance as Kudu Chemicals advances development of its sulphuric acid plant at Walvis Bay.

Shaanika previously served as Kelp Blue’s managing director, where he led the successful scaling up of Namibian operations to commercial production.

Prior to this, he held roles in banking with RMB and Standard Bank in Namibia.

Earlier in his career, Shaanika worked in operations and capital projects for De Beers in Namibia, Debmarine, and Namdeb.

He also served as chief geologist at Skorpion Zinc Mine.

“We are very pleased to welcome Shaanika to the board of Kudu Chemicals.

His appointment strengthens Kudu Chemicals’ engagement with key Namibian stakeholders and enhances the strategic capabilities of the wider GMR group as we advance our projects in the country,” Derk Hartman, GMR founder and chief executive says.

Shaanika says he is excited to join the board at “such a pivotal stage of its development”.

“I look forward to contributing to the company’s growth and supporting its role in advancing Namibia’s industrial and energy transition ambitions,” he says.

Shaanika holds a bachelor’s degree in geophysical sciences from the University of Leeds (in the United Kingdom) and a master’s of business administration from Stellenbosch Business School (in South Africa).
