The long-awaited seventh-generation Isuzu D-Max was officially launched in Namibia over the weekend.
The full double-cab range was showcased at Auas Motors, the home of Isuzu, accompanied by test drives, allowing prospective buyers and loyal owners to experience the new lineup.
To cater to a wide array of driver requirements, the vehicles are offered in engine options ranging from the 1.9-litre to the 3-litre turbo-diesel, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Top Revs joined invited guests at the launch, where conversations focused on the redesigned exterior, upgraded features, and performance specs.
Outputs range from the 1.9-litre power plant delivering 110kW and 350Nm of torque to the flagship 3-litre turbo-diesel V-Cross, which pushes out 140kW and 450Nm.
Addressing feedback regarding turbo lag in previous generations, Isuzu engineers re-engineered the powertrain to deliver more immediate throttle response.
Auas Motors managing director Gerhard Vermeulen says the lag issue was solved to elevate everyday drivability.
“Especially at higher altitudes like Windhoek’s 1 700m, there was some initial scepticism. But after driving the 1.9-litre, the change is notable and jaw-droppingly awesome,” he says.
The 1.9-litre turbo-diesel unit received a larger turbocharger, a redesigned fuel line, and updated electronic control unit calibration.
These upgrades cut turbo lag and enhance low-end torque while maintaining its 110kW output and 350Nm rating.
Despite its modest displacement, the 1.9-litre derivative holds its own against its larger stablemates. Available in 4×2 or 4×4 configurations with six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes, its primary selling point is fuel economy, boasting a combined consumption figure of 7.4L per 100km.
Inside, the cabin features refined finishes, detailed stitching, and high-end trims.
Safety technologies across the range include electronic stability control and traction control to prevent skidding on loose or wet surfaces, alongside a brake override accelerator system, which automatically reduces engine power if both the brake and accelerator pedals are depressed simultaneously.
Visual updates are most prominent on the new X-Rider model, featuring a bold black radiator grille with a red Isuzu badge, complemented by X-Rider badging on the fenders and tailgate.
Additional exterior features include a redesigned black sport bar, LED daytime running lights, LED headlights, 18-inch black alloy wheels, and front fog lamps with aerodynamic air curtains.
Beyond double cabs, the new Isuzu range includes single-cab and extended-cab bakkie variants, as well as the popular MU-X SUV.
