Seven held in Lesotho PM assassination

JOHANNESBURG – Seven people have been arrested, five in South Africa and two in Lesotho, following the assassination attempt on Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili, the SABC reported yesterday.

Lesotho Communications Minister Mothetjoa Metsing said South African and Mozambican mercenaries had been contracted to stage the botched coup.
Mosisili survived the attempt on his life after gunmen opened fire at his home in the capital Maseru on Wednesday.
Privately-owned radio station Harvest FM reported three men were killed in a gunfight with police after a group of heavily-armed men stormed the premier’s residence.
According to the broadcaster, one of the men killed was a member of the Lesotho Defence Force.
President Kgalema Motlanthe, who is chairman of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has condemned the incident, saying such acts have no place in the region.
