Rundu Chiefs promoted to NPL

WINDHOEK – Namibia First Division outfit Rundu Chiefs Football Club (FC) became the first team from the three First Division streams in the country to book a place in the Namibia Premier League (NPL) next season.

The three streams or groups of teams: North East, North West and Southern compete amongst each other and by the end of each season, the winner of the stream is automatically promoted to the NPL.

Speaking to Nampa on Sunday from the Zambezi Region, Rundu Chiefs’ coach John Sikerete said the team is ready to compete in the elite league come the beginning of the 2015/16 season.

“Rundu Chiefs supporters and sympathizers are happy to see the team back in the Premier League,” said Sikerete.

Rundu Chiefs from the North East First Division (NEFD) defeated Zambezi-based King Fisher 2-0 in their backyard at the Katima Mulilo Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Two goals during the first-half scored by Katjukua Vasekua and Horaseb Barnard were enough to guarantee the team a spot in the elite Premier League, after just one season in the First Division.

“We were relegated from the NPL because we had players that were too young and lacked experience but this time around, we are ready to compete because these young boys have grown so much from the last time they played in the Premier League. Most of these boys came from the Namibian Newspaper Cup and played in the NPL during the 2014/15 season but we are now coming to give other teams a run for their money,” said the coach.

On Sunday, they defeated another Zambezi-based outfit, Katima Wanderers 1-0 to finish the weekend on 51 points.

King Fisher are now second on the log with 37 points.

The First Division streams will come to an end in April 2015. – Nampa
