Runaway wagons derail between Usakos and Kranzberg

A TransNamib freight train derailment between Usakos and Kranzberg on Monday disrupted operations along the railway corridor.

TransNamib said rail wagons stationed at the area were involved in an uncontrolled movement incident before derailing on the main railway line.

No injuries were reported.

The affected wagons were transporting cement, containers, concrete sleepers and empty fuel tankers.

In a media statement issued on Thursday, TransNamib chief executive Desmond van Jaarsveld said preliminary information indicates the wagons unexpectedly moved before travelling uncontrolled along the railway line.

“The cause of the incident has not yet been determined, and a formal technical assessment is currently underway,” Van Jaarsveld noted.

He said the company immediately dispatched operational and safety teams to the scene to oversee recovery operations and ensure railway services are restored safely and efficiently.

Van Jaarsveld stressed that the company remains committed to safety and operational integrity while investigations continue.

“Further updates will be provided once verified information becomes available,” he said.

TransNamib apologised for the inconvenience caused by the derailment and emphasised that the national rail operator remains focused on maintaining reliable rail services across the country.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns around the state of rail infrastructure and operational safety amid continued efforts to revive the rail transport sector.
