The Republican Party (RP) has thrown its weight behind Gerson Sindano’s appointment to lead the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), saying political disagreements should not stand in the way of strengthening public institutions.
RP chief whip Mathias Mbundu said on Monday the party supports working with all political parties where it serves the interests of Namibians.
Mbundu said the president has a constitutional responsibility to recommend a person she considers suitable to lead the ECN, adding that Sindano’s performance should ultimately be judged by his conduct, integrity and competence.
“The RP does not believe that his appointment should be blocked for political reasons. We should allow the appointment to stand and work collectively to strengthen the ECN under his leadership,” he said.
His comments come amid questions over the 49 votes that supported Sindano’s appointment and the role of the United Democratic Front (UDF) being the only opposition party that voted.
Mbundu said political parties have the right to support or oppose parliamentary motions and that the UDF does not necessarily have to justify its vote to other parties.
He said claims that political support was exchanged for a position would be a serious concern if proven true, but warned against making such accusations without evidence.
“No political party should impose its position on another,” Mbundu said, calling for dialogue, respect and diplomacy among opposition parties and governing-party members of parliament.
He said the RP will support efforts to improve government efficiency regardless of which party is in power.
