THE Namibian Coast Conservation and Management (Nacoma) project has launched a month-long awareness campaign in the four coastal regions as part of its efforts to draft a coastal management policy.
The road show, which started on Saturday, will be taken to the Karas region, Hardap region, Erongo region and Kunene region. It will include a baseline study that will determine people’s awareness of and attitudes towards coastal zone management in the regions. It will also attempt to engage regional and local authorities, line ministries, and private sector and community representatives in the development of the Namibia Coastal Management White Paper. The target towns will be Keetmanshoop, Luederitz and Aus in the Karas Region, Mariental in the Hardap Region, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund in the Erongo Region and Opuwo and conservancies along the coast in the Kunene Region. The Coastal Management White Paper will address the long-term management of the Namibian coast to meet the needs and aspirations of people living there.Nacoma was set up to help protect the coastal environment while using and managing it responsibly. It became necessary to draw up a management plan for the coast because of growing economic development in the area, which brought about an unprecedented migration of people there. This resulted in pollution and other environmental degradation that went unchecked because of an absence of regulations.
