Review … ‘Zootropolis’

‘CUTE’ is a borderline racial slur and bunny underestimation is rife in ‘Zootropolis’ (2016). The latest 3D animation feature from the Disney stable follows the success of ‘Frozen’ (2013) and ‘Big Hero 6’ (2014).

Starring Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, a provincial bunny with big dreams of law enforcement, the film presents themes of prejudice and stereotypes in sheep, fox and rabbit’s clothing while employing familiar books and covers as well as dynamite and small packages tropes which prove fun for the whole family.

A heartwarming, educational and topical film that resonates deftly with reality, ‘Zootropolis’ also features the voice talents of Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, JK Simmons and Shakira who play assorted anthropomorphic animals dealing with the very human issues of ignorance and seeming self-preservation.

Fully clothed, tame and essentially existing like humans, ironically, there isn’t a human in sight in this striking city that caters for every type of animal and includes mini suburbs for rodents and special smoothie delivery for giraffes.

Imaginative, enlightening and entertaining to boot, ‘Zootropolis’ is a blockbuster with spades of spectacle and heaps of heart.
