AN emotional art exhibition that speaks volumes with regard to memory and loss was officially launched in Windhoek on Thursday.
The exhibition, comprising of textiles, cloth and thread is memorable, depicting images of sadness and remembrance, is aptly titled ‘Remembrance Through Cloth’. The exhibition tells a tale of loss and the memories attached to it, and is by solo artist Lynette Diergaardt as part of her Master of Arts degree at the College of the Arts of Kent State University in America.
Diergaardt says ‘Remembrance Through Cloth’ provides a body of work that has a permanent feel and also one that many other people can relate to.
Having lost her brother in 2013, Diergaardt felt ‘textiles play a significant part in our daily lives. Cloth holds a significant meaning and is often associated with funerals and memory. ‘Remembrance Through Cloth’ allows me to make my own commemorative textile,’ she said.
Cathy McRoberts, a textiles lecturer at the University of Namibia, officially opened the exhibition.
McRoberts described Diergaardt’s work as a result of her love for textiles and also her love for her brother.
‘They are a celebration of Lynette’s memories and a memorial to him (her brother). Some of the textiles are full of joyful memories and some more sombre. These works speak to both frame and mind and they have united Lynette’s talent as a textile artist and her love for her brother and are therefore befitting for the memorial,’ she said.
The exhibition will run until 21 May at the NAGN.
