In the world of luxury hospitality, the line between a service provider and a memory-maker is drawn through personalised touches that shape a guest’s journey: the handwritten note celebrating a special milestone, the perfectly timed sundowner at a secluded viewpoint, or the host who seems to know what is needed before asked.
As Gondwana Collection Namibia prepared for a new era of ultra-luxury hospitality with the launch of the Luna Namib Collection and the continued growth of its Secret Collection portfolio, the company invested in the one element that cannot be replicated: people.
Forty-five colleagues from across Namibia took part in an intensive butler hospitality training programme presented by the Saba International Butler Academy & Training School.
Hosted at The Weinberg Windhoek, Namib Desert Lodge and Kalahari Anib Lodge, the programme was far more than a course in etiquette. It represented a shift in mindset.
Facilitated by renowned hospitality specialist Abraham van der Westhuizen, the training brought together team leaders, collection managers, secret collection hosts, chefs, housekeepers, waiters, bartenders and gardeners.
This diversity of participants reflected a simple philosophy: exceptional guest experiences are created by everyone, not just those at reception.
This philosophy aligns closely with one of Gondwana Collection Namibia’s core values: Deliver Service Excellence.
Creating a Culture of Exceptional Service
Participants at Namib Desert Lodge and Kalahari Anib Lodge completed a butler hospitality course, concluding with a 60-question assessment that reinforced the principles of service excellence.
Senior leaders, together with the teams from Etosha Ekipa Pod and Namushasha River Villa, completed the academy’s more advanced 120-question assessment as part of their specialised training.
Participants who completed the Saba International Butler Academy’s full eight-day butler programme in Windhoek were awarded the prestigious butler pin and certificate, marking the successful completion of the academy’s highest level of butler training.
Luxury Begins Before the Guest Arrives
The newly launched Luna Namib Collection represents Gondwana’s most exclusive hospitality offering to date, promising deeply personalised stays in one of Namibia’s most spectacular landscapes.
Preparing for that level of service requires more than operational readiness; it demanded a culture where every interaction becomes an opportunity to surprise, delight, and create lasting memories.
Luxury, participants discovered, lives in the details
Throughout the training, participants were challenged to identify what the facilitator called the “golden nugget”: that one thoughtful gesture capable of transforming a great stay into an unforgettable one.
Technology Can
Assist, Hospitality
Must Still Feel Human

One of the programme’s most thought-provoking sessions explored a question increasingly relevant to modern hospitality: Can artificial intelligence (AI) replace human creativity?
Participants explored how AI can support creativity by helping hosts prepare personalised experiences.
However, the training emphasised that AI can never replace genuine human connections.
Only people can recognise emotion, read body language and respond with authentic care. Technology may help prepare the experience; people give it meaning.
Excellence Is Practised, Not Memorised
Participants refined room turndown techniques, mastered international dining etiquette, practised valet protocols for unpacking and packing luggage, learnt cigar presentation, explored advanced wine pairing and refreshed professional table service and wine-pouring techniques.
The experience culminated in participants becoming guests themselves, with interactive role-playing scenarios strengthening communication skills, confidence and teamwork.
They enjoyed a formal multi-course dinner where table etiquette, posture, and conversation became part of the learning experience.
Experiencing hospitality from the guest’s perspective proved just as valuable as delivering it.
Preparing for the Future of Namibian Luxury
As Gondwana’s portfolio of premium experiences continues to expand, the investment in people remains its greatest competitive advantage.
The Luna Namib Collection introduces a new benchmark of immersive ultra-luxury, private hosting and personalised experiences, while the Secret Collection continues to redefine intimate, high-end travel across Namibia.
Behind every carefully curated itinerary stands a team equipped not only with technical skills but with the confidence to anticipate needs, tell authentic stories and create meaningful human connections.
