Following a youth camp that the Namibian Red Cross hosted late last year, the humanitarian organisation aims to work closely with the youth this year.
The Namibia Red Cross Society youth programme has been in existence since 2008. Since the inception of the National Society in 1992, youth volunteers have played a key role in assisting the National Society with the implementation of various projects and programmes. The youth camp that was held in Rundu was aimed at creating a structure for the society.
The youth members elected into positions on the structure will be responsible for supporting and co-ordinating the youth activities within the nine regions the Namibian Red Cross operates in. With the inception of the National youth committee, the Namibian Red Cross Society has given power of autonomy back to the youth to work independently in the communities but still under the umbrella of the Namibian Red Cross Society.
The camp featured presentations by Khomas Regional Acting Manager Rodney Cloete and Australian volunteer Penny Middleton who gave a presentation on the seven fundamental principals of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. The youth played an active role in playing dramatic scenarios on the principals that showed their high level of participation.
The youth elected in the National Youth Committee are Alfred Ipinge (National Youth Chairperson, Khomas), Paulus Ndeikolele (Vice-Chairperson, Ohangwena), Lisias Haimbodi (Treasurer, Otjozondjupa) and the four additional members: Onesmus Nakandungile (Oshikoto), Lautia Shivute (Omusati), Conrad Kanema (Kavango), Gift Mikiti (Zambezi) and co-opted member Felicia Bolokoto.
With the new leadership, the society is calling upon youth from the nine regions to sign up with their regional offices and be part of the youth initiative.
