THE economic and commercial value of the boerbok goat breed for Namibia was emphasised at a recent auction where 153 animals fetched a total of N$1 million within just a few hours.
THE successful farming couple Jannie and Judy Wiese of Wieserus farm sold their entire boerbok stud and fetched record prices, although about a third of the goats were very young.
The highest prices were N$25 000 for a stud ram and N$12 000 for an ewe. ‘A big surprise for us was that a barely five-month-old male lamb fetched a record price N$16 000,’ said Piet Coetzee, who conducted athe auction for Namboer.
The Wiese couple has been breeding the hardy boerbok goats for the past 20 years. Commercial and communal farmers alike value these goats’ suitability for the harsh Namibian climate.
