RAW: tough ultra race on cards

THE race series that promises to take ultra running to the next level, RAW (Run across the World), is almost upon us.

The debut race of this international series starts here through our own stunning Namib Desert. The first stage of the series, which differentiates itself from other races by only taking place in the most exotic locales on the planet, begins at the exquisite Sossusvlei on February 22 next year.
This location was selected alongside the Scottish highlands, the Swedish fjords, the Arctic tundra and the Middle Eastern deserts. This five-day adventure will not only be spectacular but challenging as it tests some of the world’s top sportspeople against the unforgiving African elements.
Just one of those world-class athletes is the young South African hot shot Lisa De Speville.
This young lass is at her age is surprisingly already a veteran of adventure races around the globe, having competed in numerous events over 250 km.
A freelance journalist, Lisa regularly writes for Runner’s World SA, GoMulti Magazine and many international websites.
Lisa is the co-author, with Jacques Marais, of ‘Adventure Racing’, a hefty, full-colour, hardcover book on adventure racing.
The book was released in the UK at the end of 2004 and in the US and Canada at the beginning of 2005.
Lisa is also the owner and editor of South Africa’s adventure racing website, www.ar.co.za, where along with www.ambitionlife.com you will be able to follow her progress throughout the race.
Lisa joins a high-class international field with contestants coming from as far afield as Italy, the UK and Kenya.
The race, to feature daily on DStv’s Supersport channels across the whole African continent, will be covered by international broadcasters as far afield as China, the Middle East and Europe.
If you are up for the challenge, entries close in February 2009.
