The North East First Division title race is heading for a dramatic final-day finish, with KK United FC, Ohangwena Nampol FC, and Cuca Tops FC locked in a tense three-way battle for promotion to the premier league.

At the top, KK United and Ohangwena Nampol are level on 38 points, separated only by goal difference. In comparison, Cuca Tops remain within striking distance on 37 points after a weekend that kept the race finely balanced.

KK United will be rueing their fortunes after dropping vital points at a crucial stage. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Cuca Tops before suffering a 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened United Stars, a result that denied them the chance to secure early promotion.

Despite the setback, KK United coach Matjayi ‘Nakata’ Petrus says his side remains composed heading into the decisive final round.

“The game against United Stars was one of our worst performances this season. We did not play as expected. They came with full energy because they needed the points, and it was not easy for us,” Petrus says.

He adds that external factors, including developments involving other teams, will not distract his side.

“We are very calm and focused on our next game. What happens in other matches or to other teams is not our concern. Our job is to prepare well and make sure we collect maximum points,” he says.

On whether goal difference could influence their approach, Petrus maintains they will stick to their identity.

“We approach every game aggressively because we aim to collect maximum points. We respect our opponents, but we go out there to win,” he says.

Petrus also highlights strong community support from Nkurenkuru as a key motivator.

“The community has been supporting us throughout, travelling every weekend to Rundu. It means a lot to the boys. If we achieve promotion, it will be a massive moment for the team and the Kavango West region if we make it,” he adds.

Ohangwena Nampol, meanwhile, strengthened their push with a crucial 2-1 win over Black Hawks, underlining their ability to grind out results under pressure.

Coach Stefanus Kampandja says discipline and unity could prove decisive in the title race.

“We respect KK United because they have shown consistency throughout the season, just like us. However, what separates our team is our discipline, unity, and resilience. We have built a strong team culture where every player understands their role and fights for the badge,” he says.

With everything on the line, Stefanus emphasises the need for balance between defence and attack.

“A solid defence has been our foundation, but football today requires balance. In a decisive match like this, defence alone is not enough, we need to be effective in attack as well,” he says.

He also highlights the importance of mental preparation in such a high-stakes encounter.

“We emphasise staying calm, focused, and treating the match like any other, while understanding its importance. The players must trust the process and not be overwhelmed by the occasion,” he says.

However, Ohangwena Nampol’s promotion hopes could be complicated by Namibia Football Association statutes relating to club ownership structures, with another Nampol-affiliated side already competing in the top flight.

Stefanus acknowledges the situation but insists it remains an administrative matter.

“As a club, we are aware that there are regulations governing ownership and eligibility. These matters are handled at an administrative level. Our responsibility is to perform on the field,” he says.

He adds that the players have been briefed but remain focused on football.

“We cannot control administrative decisions, but we can control our performance. The message is simple: give your best and stay professional,” he says.

Cuca Tops, meanwhile, remain firmly in contention after a resilient weekend. Their draw against KK United, followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Unam Rundu Campus, keeps them just one point behind the leaders.

Interim coach Kandjendje ‘Owen’ Mukuve has thanked his players, fans and the management for believing in him, saying his side remains on course despite dropping points against KK – a game that would’ve changed their fortunes.

“The overall performance of my team was okay. We left the weekend with four points, which puts us closer to our objective of reaching the premier league,” he says.

He admits conceding early against KK United disrupted their plans.

“We wanted to build momentum early, but conceding made it difficult. The boys had to double their effort to come back, and they did well,” he says.

Mukuve stresses the importance of grinding out results in a tight race.

“In a league like this, you will drop points. The important thing is not to lose on your bad days, you must win ugly or at least get a draw,” he says.

Elsewhere, Ntunguru FC produced one of the standout performances of the weekend with back-to-back wins, including a 3-0 victory over Oshikango Chiefs and a 2-0 result against Further Fighters.

The last games of the season this weekend that will determine who will make it into the premier league will see Ohangwena Nampol travel to Tsumeb to take on Chief Santos at Oscar Oscar Norich Stadium.

Cuca Tops, who need to win and hope other results go their way, will lock horns with United Stars at Rundu Sport Stadium, and with their fate in their own hands.

KK United will take on Unam Rundu campus at the same venue.
