Residents of the informal location of Maporeza at Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West region have appealed to the councillor of the Nkurenkuru constituency to provide enough water for the growing number of residents.
In June, the residents led by the chairperson of the development committee for Maporeza 1, Erastus Kakara, handed over a petition to councillor Fillipus Tenga, in which they pleaded for a water pump station and three water tanks as well as a borehole for both Maporeza 1 and 2.
In their petition, the residents say they were informed that the company contracted to provide these services instead went to Nkaranawa informal settlement to attend to a similar need.
“The community is pleading with your good office to intervene in this matter.
We want to co-exist and live in harmony with all localities in the Nkurenkuru constituency,” reads the residents’ petition which was seen by The Namibian.
Kakara told The Namibian on Saturday that a water pump station with three water tanks were recently installed in their area, but that they still need more boreholes as the population of Maporeza is growing.
He explains that the Maporeza location is divided into 1 and 2 and jointly have about 3 000 residents.
Kakara says this requires more boreholes in both Maporeza 1 and 2.
The area, Kakara says also needs electricity and residents have asked Nored to install power.
According to him, they were promised that electricity will be installed by September.
Councillor Tenga says he is fully aware of the need for water at Maporeza and that a water pump station with three tanks is currently being installed. “I am fully aware of their petition and my office is trying to attend to this,” says Tenga.
He calls on the residents of Maporeza to be patient as a lack of funds remain a challenge to attend to residents’ needs.
“In many cases, there is no money and water supply also has to be done through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform,” says Tenga.
