President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Wednesday visited the former Swapo refugees who have been camping outside the Swapo headquarters in Windhoek since October last year.
Group spokesperson Mathues Nangolo says the president questioned why they were still camped at the party headquarters.
“I don’t know why the president is pretending not to know why we are here,” Nangolo says.
According to him, the group told Nandi-Ndaitwah that the former refugees never received the repatriation benefits and financial assistance they were promised after returning to Namibia.
Nangolo says the group would continue its protest until its demands are addressed.
“We will not leave. We are fighting for what is rightfully ours,” he says.
He says the president did not allow members of the group to freely raise questions during the engagement.
The group has been camped outside the Swapo headquarters since October, demanding answers over outstanding repatriation benefits and related grievances.
Nangolo says he told Nandi-Ndaitwah that the group felt betrayed and would not leave the site until their grievances were addressed.
“I am calling on all war veterans who have finished their traditional work in the villages to come and join us so that we can put tents around the entire building,” he says.
