More than 2 000 people have registered with Yambuka Housing, a new company that aims to provide affordable prefabricated houses in Windhoek.
Members of the public were invited to register their interest in buying one of the company’s homes at its launch at Xamro Cultural Centre in Windhoek on Saturday.
“We stayed until four in the afternoon because the queues simply did not stop. By the end of the day, over 2 000 people had registered their interest in a Yambuka house,” Yambuka director Twapewa Kadhikwa says in a press release on Sunday.
The company will offer two housing models: One is called the Iyaloo house, which is an 18 square metre one-bedroom, one-bathroom house. The other is the 40 square metre Shavena house, which has two bedrooms, one bathroom and a combined kitchen and living area.
“Our mission is simple: to move families from shacks into a Yambuka house, and today showed us just how urgent that mission is,” Kadhikwa says.
Member of parliament George Kambala at the event said housing is a form of justice and that he supports initiatives that can provide formal homes for all families.
“A prefabricated home may sound modest to some, but to a family that has never owned a door of their own to lock, it is nothing short of a beginning,” he said.
The cheapest of the prefabricated houses is N$99 950.
The company says it is developing a financing instrument to help people buy their units.
“Housing is not a sector. Housing is a form of justice, and the rental crisis we are living through is a form of injustice we can no longer normalise,” Kambala said.
