Potholes to get worse, N$1.3 billion needed to fix roads, RFA says

Vehicle owners should brace themselves for more potholes during the rainy season as the Road Fund Administration has not received enough funding to repair Namibia’s roads.

RFA chief executive Ali Ipinge on Tuesday during a consultation on the fund’s business plan said it needs at least N$1.3 billion to address the issue.

“We have made a request to the government for support to deal with the road damage and are still waiting for a response. However, with the rainy season here again, the potholes will get worse, which means more cost to vehicle owners,” he said.

To meet future financing gaps, the RFA is consulting on adjusting road user charges or introducing tolling.

The fund needs about N$7 billion annually to meet its current expenditure needs, Ipinge said.

It received about N$4.1 billion for the current financial year.

There is a maintenance and rehabilitation backlog of N$4.5 billion for the 2025/26 financial year, he said.
