Police warn against use of police insignia in AI-generated content

The Namibian police have distanced themselves from artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images and videos depicting police officers wearing replicas of official police uniforms.

In a media statement issued on Wednesday, acting inspector general Anne-Marie Nainda says the police have noted the circulation of multiple AI-generated images on social media platforms portraying police officers wearing replicas of the Namibian Police Force uniform.

“The Namibian police does not encourage the creation or dissemination of such content, particularly where the information accompanying these images contradicts the functions, mandate and values of the Namibian Police Force,” she says.

Nainda says such content has the potential to tarnish the image of the police force and create confusion among the public.

She says the police force distances itself from the images and videos, despite the visible insignia, name and replicas appearing in them.

“The Namibian police distances itself from these images and videos, despite the visible insignia, name and or replicas appearing therein and, therefore, condemns such actions in the strongest terms and cautions members of the public against the creation, publication and circulation of misleading, malicious or defamatory content. Such actions may have serious legal and social repercussions,” Nainda says.

She warns against any form of impersonation of police officers, adding that the police force remains committed to promoting peace, unity, law and order.
