Police probe investigator over sexual advances on suspect

THE Namibian Police are investigating allegations that a police officer involved in the probe of the N$2,1 million Sanlam fraud case made sexual advances toward a female suspect in the matter.

Oshana regional police commissioner Andreas Shilelo confirmed yesterday (Wednesday) that the allegations were initially reported to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which subsequently referred the matter to the police for further investigation.

“There are allegations that one of our investigators, during the course of the investigation, made sexual advances. That allegation was reported to the ACC,” Shilelo says.

“The ACC looked at it and referred it to the police, and the police are now investigating to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation and whether it had any bearing on the arrest process,” he added.

According to Shilelo, the officer is part of the team investigating the Sanlam fraud case and had been communicating with the suspect by telephone while gathering information relevant to the investigation.

“He was digging for more information on the suspect. It turned into a conversation on the phone where the officer was proposing, and then the suspect took the matter to the Anti-Corruption Commission,” he says.

Shilelo said preliminary information obtained by the ACC indicates that conversation was recorded.
