COASTAL Pirates dominated the Namibian inline hockey league this year by winning seven of the 10 categories, ahead of the national championships next month.
Following the final club tournament which was recently held in Swakopmund, the top four teams in each age group category over the whole season qualified for the Namibian Ice and Inline Hockey Association (Niiha) National Championships, to be sponsored by Theo’s SuperSpar next month, with Pirates the dominant team.
They finished first in seven of the age group categories, second in two, and fourth in one of the 10 age group categories.
In the Open Men’s category, two Pirates teams finished among the top four. Pirates Black came first with 86 points and Pirates Orange third on 52, while Badgers Yellow came second on 53 and Kamikaze fourth on 45.
In the Open Women’s category, Pirates Black came first with 75 points, followed by Badgers (45), Scorpions (35) and Cazadores (28), while Pirates also won the Women’s Masters category on 30 points, with Scorpions second on 12 points.
Pirates won the 18 and under category on 37 points, followed by Scorpions (26), Badgers (13) and Kamikaze (12), and the 16 and under category with 45 points, followed by Scorpions (24), Cazadores (21) and Badgers.
They also dominated the 14 and under category with 54 points, followed by Cazadores (38), Badgers (29) and Scorpions (27), as well as the 12 and under category with 43 points, followed by Scorpions (25), Cazadores (24) and Kamikaze (23).
The only categories that they did not win were the Senior Men, the 10 and under and eight and under categories.
In the Senior Men’s category they were narrowly pipped by Kamikaze who finished on top with 36 points, followed by Pirates (34), Badgers (17) and Scorpions (1).
In the 10 and under category, Scorpions finished on top with 40 points, followed by Badgers (28), Cazadores (23) and Pirates (22), and in the 8 and under category, Kamikaze Red finished on top, followed by Pirates Black (39), Scorpions Red (36) and Badgers (30).
The Niiha Championships will be held from 1 to 3 November at The Dome in Swakopmund, where the top four teams in each age group category will battle it out for overall honours.
The annual awards for the top scorer, top assist and top goal tender will also be presented to the deserving players.
