THE Ovambanderu community will convene at Okahandja this weekend to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the execution of chief Kahimemua ‘Hijakungairi’ Nguvauva.
Hosted by the Ovambanderu Traditional Authority under the theme ‘Beyond 1896: The Legacy of Kahimemua Nguvauva and Early Anti-Colonial Resistance,’ the event honours the life and sacrifice of chief Nguvauva, a symbol of early anti-colonial resistance in Namibia, alongside fellow leader Nikodemus Kavikunua.
Both leaders were executed by a German colonial firing squad on 11 June 1896, after steadfastly opposing German colonial land dispossession.
