The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (Cran) on Wednesday revealed that the Otjiwarongo municipality has been hacked.
Cran chief executive Emilia Nghikembua confirmed this in a statement on 16 July.
“The Namibia Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (Nam-CSIRT), housed at Cran, has identified a cybersecurity incident involving systems or networks belonging to the Otjiwarongo municipality.
“The incident was detected through credible threat intelligence sources on 16 July 2025.,” she says.
Preliminary indications are that possible data exfiltration took place, as well as a ransom demand by ‘INC Ransom’.
Given the sensitivity of the matter, Nam-CSIRT has notified the municipality and recommended immediate containment measures, including data mapping to determine the extent of exposure and the isolation of affected systems, the statement says.
It says a formal investigation has been initiated, and Nam-CSIRT will provide an appropriate update in due course.
