One-Stop Fashion at Sizzling Boutique

Owned by Johanna Uutoni, Sizzling Boutique is one of Windhoek’s trendiest retail spaces stocking everything from sexy little dresses to heels, corporate, mens-, bridal and swimwear, and accessories.

Having dressed celebrities such as Selma Kamanya, Brumhilda Ochs-Pachawo and Pombili Shilongo, Sizzling Boutique stands out for its stylish pieces.

Since Uutoni started the boutique in her home in 2013, she has gone from selling to her colleagues to developing a social media presence. As the demand grew, so did a physical space. In fact, the idea to open the boutique came to her after a discussion with her husband.

“He asked me what else I wanted to do besides my full-time job. This got me thinking and the idea to start my own boutique came to mind. I have always loved fashion and looking good. I then realised that a person’s salary can never be enough and that it’s important to always have a back-up plan. You can lose your full-time job at any time.”

Uutoni opted for fashion because she always struggled to find unique items. “I hate wearing something that someone else is also wearing. I want to stand out and not blend in,” she said.

Uutoni says she faced several challenges when selling from home. “The space was not big enough. I could not stock enough items and my clients increased.”

Finally, Sizzling Boutique, located opposite Park Foods Shopping Mall in Khomasdal, opened its doors in 2014. The Engela-born entrepreuneur says doing research about fashion and making sure she has something exclusive to offer for her clients are some of the keys to her success.

“To have the same items as other shops is a huge downfall for any business in the industry. This can instantly chase your clients away. Most customers want something they own alone. Even if the item is beautiful, they won’t buy it because they like the feeling of uniqueness,” she says.

Sizzling Boutique also caters for weddings, offering couples the option to buy on account, and allowing them to pay off the items over a period of time.

Uutoni decided to do this because she wanted to make weddings more special for young couples.

“Weddings are very close to my heart. It must be a day of laugher and joy. They can be expensive and this can cause a lot of tension. I really don’t want this. It is also easier to buy everything from one store,” she says.

One of the challenges that Uutoni faces is stocking menswear, despite only doing this recently.

“I don’t stock a lot, because it might not sell. I mainly have them available online. Men are into brands. At my shop, we don’t specialise in them, but something beautiful and trendy.”

Uutoni sees nothing but growth for the business. Later this year, she plans on introducing hair products, because her clients have requested it.

“They are buying their entire look from me – the dress, shoes and accessories, and afterwards, they have to travel far just to buy hair. If they can get everything at once, then I will be happy. I like seeing my clients looking stunning for important days in their lives,” she says.

Speaking about her future plans for the boutique, Uutoni says she wants to start selling in bulk as this will provide more entrepreneurial opportunities, especially for those in villages.

“I know many people who also want to start up their own businesses but don’t know where to start. They also don’t know much about online shopping. This will keep many busy and give new hope for their lives,” she says.
