The Ondonga Traditional Authority has postponed the commemoration of the battle of Amutuni to next January.
The authority said the event, originally scheduled for 28 January, will now take place on 28 January 2026.
Angula Ndjembo, senior headman of the traditional authority and head of the delegation to the King Nehale Memorial Park at Namutoni in the Etosha National Park, said the postponement was necessitated by scheduling conflicts and insufficient time for preparations.
“We could not host the event this year because there was not enough time, and priorities were shifted elsewhere,” Ndjembo stated.
While the official commemoration was postponed, a smaller delegation still visited the memorial site on 28 January to honour King Nehale lyaMpingana and his warriors who fought against the German army in 1904.
“We went to greet the heroes of King Nehale lyaMpingana who participated in the battle of Amutuni lyoManenge on 28 January 1904,” he said.
The postponed commemoration will mark the 122nd anniversary of the battle.
