Ondonga Traditional Authority harvests 11 tonnes of maize

The Ondonga Traditional Authority in the Oshikoto region has harvested 11 tonnes of maize from a 32-hectare field, marking a step towards improving local food security.

The harvest took place at their field at Omutse Gwondjamba within the Omuthiya constituency.

According to Ondonga Agricultural Project chairperson Jelly Kambala, the harvest was a success thanks to a specific type of maize seed imported from Zambia.

This is the first time the authority has cultivated this particular maize variety.

“We bought it outside of the country, and it is a very good type of maize,” Kambala said on Thursday.

The maize will be sold to residents of the region, providing them with high-quality seeds for future planting and maize for personal consumption.

“Our priority is for our community to profit from this harvest by obtaining good quality seeds and maize for their own consumption,” Kambala stated.

The chairperson encouraged community members to purchase the maize, highlighting the seeds’ superior yield. He added that the project demonstrates a strong commitment to local economic growth and food security, building on a previous initiative in July when the community had its first potato harvest.
