On the spot with Brian Brendell

FORMER Brave Warriors and Civics stalwart Brian Brendell’s career was cut short by an injury sustained in his prime.

The talented Rehoboth-born midfielder is best remembered as Namibia’s standout performer at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana where he scored twice, finding the net against Morocco and Guinea as the Warriors bowed out in the group phase.

My best teammate was the late Franklin ‘Pielle’ April. We played together for Civics and Brave Warriors.

The coach is Ali Akan, while my namesake Brian Bantam was the toughest rival.

Q: Who was the best coach you played under?

It has to be the late Ben Bamfuchile [from Zambia].

Q: What was your most memorable competition?

Playing for my country at Afcon 2008 tops the list.

Q: What was the highlight of your career?

Scoring the only goals for the Brave Warriors at Afcon ’08.

Q: The lowest moment of your career as a player?

A nagging knee injury that made me retire from playing football in 2013.

Q: Name your most memorable performance by a Namibian athlete or team?

Frank Fredericks winning medals at the Olympic Games.
