The Omaludi festival is currently underway at Okongo in the Ohangwena region, under the theme: ‘Dream agriculture and think tourism’.

The event is aimed at promoting agriculture, creating platforms for networking, and sharing ideas. It was was officiated by deputy prime minister and international relations minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

The topic of the day is self sufficiency in terms of food security.

Okongo village council chairperson Lazarus Shapwa noted that there is a need to intensify focus on agriculture as a number one sector, as it can greatly contribute to poverty alleviation, reduce inequality, create employment and reduce hunger.

“I am, therefore, calling on stakeholders, the government and commercial farmers who are entrusted with the role of developing agriculture to identify shortcomings and recommend measures that would enable communal farmers to start thinking of farming as a business in order to remain adaptive in this dynamic sector,” said Shapwa.
