Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) chief executive Abraham Nehemia says there is an urgent need to rehabilitate the water channel from Calueque to Eenhana, as the system built in the 1970s can no longer meet the region’s growing demand for water.
Nehemia made the remarks on Thursday during the inauguration of the Ohangwena II Wellfield Water Supply Scheme at Eenhana.
He said the ageing infrastructure was designed to serve a much smaller population, but with rapid growth and increasing water needs, it is now struggling to keep up.
“There is a serious need to upgrade the Calueque–Eenhana canal to ensure reliable water supply to the region,” Nehemia said.
The Ohangwena II project, he added, will help reduce the region’s dependence on the old system by tapping into underground water sources and improving access to clean water for more communities.
